Rams & Rebels look to rebound
As the BCFC play-offs get set to open October 12 the Westshore Rebels and Langley Rams face crucial stakes in their upcoming matchup after tough upset losses to their regional rivals. The Rebels are reeling from a harsh 43-11 defeat against the VI Raiders, while the Rams haven’t fared much better, falling 33-5 to the Valley Huskers two weeks ago. Both teams will need to shake off their recent struggles if they hope to secure a favorable playoff position.
The previous encounter between these teams this season saw the Rams overpower the Rebels with a definitive 23-10 victory. This time, however, the dynamics have shifted. With a win, the Rams can guarantee a second-place finish in the BCFC, allowing them home-field advantage in next weekend’s semi-final. For the Rebels, victory is imperative; they must win by at least 14 points to take the series with Langley or a win by 13 or less would necessitate help from the Valley Huskers. A rebels win and Huskers win over the VI Raiders would mean the Rebels finish in 2nd spot
The Rams' formidable rushing attack, led by Bruce Jones, who racked up 182 yards and a touchdown in their earlier clash, will be crucial. However, they will face a significant challenge as they will be without their starting quarterback Palaina Hooper, sidelined with a lower body injury. Hunter Norman is set to step in at the helm, and his ability to maintain composure and execute plays will be vital to Langley’s success.
Conversely, the Rebels must channel their frustration from last week’s loss into a performance that showcases their offensive capabilities and solidifies their defense. The Rebels lost composure in the Raiders loss, resulting in 3 player ejections. Strong responses from their key players will be essential as they look to overcome the Rams and strengthen their playoff aspirations. Key player in this case starts with quarterback Ethan Pickard who leads the BCFC in passing yards (2013). Pickard went 20 for 37 and 271 with no touchdown passes and an interception when these teams last met. The Rams front 7 held the Rebels to just 52 rushing yards. Both the Rebels rushing and passing games will have to be better against a Rams defence that sits second in the conference in both rushing and passing yards against.
